26.07.2016 - FM Lavrov’s interview for Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society’s website: Christians in Middle East, situation in Syria

Question: Mr Lavrov, the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society has historical ties with the Middle East, the people living in this internationally significant region – the land of three global religions. The Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society has always pursued noble goals and sought to strengthen Russia’s position in the Middle East. June 3, 2017 will mark 135 years since this ancient society was founded. What do you think of its current activities, including its friendly ties with Middle Eastern people, its contribution to cultural, historical and spiritual heritage, and mainly the phenomenon of “Russian Palestine”? Why do you think the Society has been so long lasting and instrumental in the Middle East as the oldest non-governmental organisation in the over 100 years of its history? Sergey Lavrov: To begin with, I’d like to congratulate all Society members on the upcoming 135th anniversary of the day Alexander III decreed the founding of the organisation following the initiative of many prominent personalities and public figures of the time. This society was designed to promote friendly relations with the people of the region, particularly to create favourable conditions for pilgrims. However, it didn’t just seek to make it possible for Russian people to travel to the holy sites but also to ensure Russia’s presence in the Holy Land, to create the “Russian Palestine” you mentioned.

Question: Mr Ryabkov, more statements are being made in the West to the effect that Iran is trying to gain access to dual technologies contrary to the related UN Security Council resolution. At the same time, Tehran has expressed its growing concern over US and EU’s delays in following through on their obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear programme. Could this delay undermine the JCPOA and prevent the fulfilment of the agreements that were reached between the P5+1 group and Iran? 19.07.2016 - Statement of President Putin in response to the report by the World Anti-Doping Agency

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Recent events and the tense atmosphere that has formed around international sport and the Olympic movement involuntarily recall the situation in the early 1980s. Back then, many Western countries, citing the deployment of Soviet troops in Afghanistan, boycotted the Moscow Olympics. Four years later, the Soviet Union retaliated by boycotting the Los Angeles Olympics, using the pretext of an allegedly insufficient level of security for the Soviet team. The result was that many Soviet and American athletes and athletes from other countries were caught up in this campaign of reciprocal boycotts and lost the chance to add their names to world sporting history. Their years of long and hard effort and training were in vain. In short, people had their dreams broken and became hostages of political confrontation. The Olympic movement found itself in a serious crisis and faced divisions within. Later, some of the political figures of that era on both sides admitted that this had been a mistake.
