On 27 January 2012 a traditional ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial near the Imperial War Museum marked the International Holocaust Remembrance Day – anniversary of liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army. The event was attended by local authorities and NGO’s, Embassies of CIS countries and WW2 veterans. Speaking in Moscow Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin called on the US to drop its missile defence plans or face a Russian military-technical response, of the kind that has been outlined by President Dmitry Medvedev. He stressed that it referred to the US plans to deploy interceptor rockets in Poland in 2018 and send missile defence ships to the Baltic, the Barents and the Norwegian Seas. He also renewed Russia’s proposal to the US and NATO to develop a joint air and missile defence system for Europe. Moscow does not intend to propose any initiatives on missile defense, which the U.S. could interpret as concessions. This was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, speaking on Ekho Moskvy radio station on 26 January 2012. Moscow sees it impossible to vote on the West’s draft resolution on Syria, at the UN Security Council, the Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov stated.
