07.05.2015 - Letter to the editor of the Economist (by Ambassador Yakovenko)

Like many Russian citizens, I do have a problem with your highly biased piece on the Great Patriotic War (The Economist, May 2nd 2015).

06.05.2015 - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview for Russia Beyond the Headlines supplement to Handelsblatt, May 6, 2015

Question: Historically, Russia and Germany have attached special significanceto their relations. We share long-standing and broad political, cultural and, of course, economic ties. What role can and should business play in enhancing trust between the two countries, especially at a time when political contact is limited, as is the case now with the Western sanctions against Russia?

06.05.2015 - Yemen: recipes imposed from outside won't work (by Ambassador Yakovenko for RT)

Russia consistently calls for a peaceful resolution of the internal political crisis in Yemen. This should be achieved through an inclusive inter-Yemeni dialogue under UN auspices. No ready-made solutions may be imposed from the outside.

04.05.2015 - Foreign Ministry statement on the anniversary of the May 2, 2014, events in Odessa

The first anniversary of one of the most tragic episodes in Ukraine’s internal conflict is marked on May 2. On this date, neo-Nazi Banderites burned unarmed people in the Trade Unions House in Odessa. This barbarous act of intimidation claimed several dozen lives of people whose only guilt was their open declaration of their civil position in rejecting the anti-constitutional coup d’état carried out in Kiev in February 2014 and the rampage of ultranationalist radicals in Ukraine.

29.04.2015 - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview for Evelina Zakamskaya’s show Opinion on the Rossiya-24 network, Moscow, April 27, 2015

Question: Humanity is facing challenges and threats, which no single country or nation can deal with single-handedly. One of the numerous examples is the recent earthquake in Nepal, which has claimed thousands of lives. Seventy years ago, the civilised world created the United Nations Organisation at a conference in San Francisco, an institution that was designed to prevent and help deal with humanitarian, natural and military disasters. The inviolability of the underlying UN principles has been placed in question today, and we need to protect it. How would you assess the margin of safety of the UN and its role in the modern world? Sergey Lavrov: I think the UN margin of safety is very large. Its founding fathers, who formulated the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, were very far-sighted.
