PRESS RELEASES AND NEWS

16.03.2017

To participants and guests of the “Valentina Tereshkova: the First woman in space” exhibition (15 March 2017)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am glad to welcome you at the opening of the exhibition dedicated to Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova.
The name of Valentina Tereshkova, legendary “Chaika”, is known worldwide. She was the first woman to scale the heights of outer space. And the only one to have piloted a spaceship on her own. Her flight was one of the brightest and most significant events of the 20th century.
To the present day, the aspiration to learn the Universe has united scientists and engineers from many countries. Russia has been and is among the leaders of this movement. We strongly believe that cooperation in the exploration of outer space must serve the progress of entire humanity and develop only for peaceful purposes.
Astronauts say that if people were to see our planet from the space orbit, they would never want to harm it. What is more, they would try to make this world a kinder and better place. This very much applies to Valentina Tereshkova. She has always done and continues to do a lot for the development of international cultural and scientific ties.
I am sure that the visitors of this unique exhibition, held as part of the programme of the Russia-UK Year of Science and Education, will learn more about the history and the present day of the Russian space programme. And, of course, they will have the unforgettable experience of meeting Valentina Tereshkova.
I wish you a great evening and all the best.

D.Medevedev
Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation

On 20 April Minister of State for Europe and the Americas Sir Alan Duncan, speaking in the Commons, accused the Government of Chechnya of inciting violence against LGBT people, persecution of gays and ill-treatment of over 100 men because of their sexual orientation. These allegations are solely based on publications in the “Novaya Gazeta” newspaper and are not supported by any other proven data. Russian law enforcement authorities received no notifications from the so-called “victims” of threats. Nevertheless, they conducted proper checks, which didn’t reveal any evidence of violence and ill-treatment of LGBT persons.

20.04.2017 - Briefing by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Moscow, April 19, 2017

I would like to touch on fake news and hoaxes – in fact, blatant misinformation – in this context. I announced a figure today that shows that Russia has sent over 60 humanitarian convoys to the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. Just remember what it all began with: tweets and Western press reports about Russia launching an armed invasion of Ukraine. Convoys in duly marked white lorries were made out to be carrying armoured vehicles and not humanitarian aid.
