1965 - 1966 – Third secretary of the Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Soviet Union);
1966 - 1971 – Third, then Second Secretary of the Minister’s Secretariat;
1971 - 1973 – Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Soviet Union);
1973 - 1976 - Senior Counsellor, Unit of Foreign Policy Planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Soviet Union);
1976 - 1979 - Deputy Permanent Representative of the Soviet Union to the United Nations in New York;
1979 - 1980 – Deputy of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Soviet Union);
1980 - 1986 – Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union;
1986 - 1990 - Ambassador of the USSR to Cyprus;
1990 - 1995 – Head of the Second European Department, (since 1994 – Director of the Second European Department) Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union /Russia;
1995 - 1997 - Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Norway;
