Meeting of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation G.M. Gatilov with the General Director of UNESCO I.Bokova
25 June 2012, the meeting of Russian Delegation, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia G.M Gatilov with General Director of UNESCO Irina Bokova took place in the framework of the 36th session of the Heritage Committee of UNESCO. The meeting was held in St. Petersburg. During the course of the concerned exchange of the opinions, high level of interaction between Russia and UNESCO was highly evaluated by both sides. As Gatilov mentioned, in Russia the organization is much sought after and has a well-deserved reputation as a leading institution of international humanitarian cooperation in the implementation of programmes and projects which involved various structures of the Russian federal and regional authorities, as well as a wide range of non-governmental organizations, educational and scientific institutions, representatives of civil society, and youth associations. The Head of the Russian delegation mentioned the increased focus of UNESCO's qualitative renewal of its activities, perfection of the structure, and the expansion of cooperation with other UN organizations over the past few years. He also supported the efforts of the UNESCO Management targeted to the use of advances in education, science and culture to endure a global sustainable development, and emphasized Russia's willingness to continue to provide its rich human and scientific potential in order to strengthen the Organization's position as an intellectual leader in the UN system. On her part, I. Bokova expressed appreciation to the Russian Federation for a crucial contribution for the preparation of a major outreach programme of the Organization in the year of the 40th anniversary of the Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The General Director of UNESCO also called for the further development of cooperation between UNESCO and Russia in accordance with the great potential in science, education and other areas of the Organization of our country education and other areas of the Organization. In the development of this idea, I. Bokova proposed a series of perspective suggestions that both sides agreed to work together in the nearest future.
Question (addressed to US Secretary of State John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov): After your recent discussions, including on Syria and the episode of detention of a US Embassy official in Moscow on a charge of espionage, do you think that your collective work is constructive? Sergey Lavrov (answers after John Kerry): Regarding the incident of the detention of a US Embassy official in Moscow that you have mentioned, everything, that the Russian party wished to say about it, was said yesterday in the comment of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. I have nothing to add.

Today we sign the second in history legally binding panarctic document – Agreement on Cooperation on Marine Oil Pollution Preparedness and Response in the Arctic. This is another evidence of high responsibility of Arctic countries for the state of affairs in the region. The next is the preparation of the Agreement on Marine Oil Spill Prevention.
