MASS MEDIA IN RUSSIA

The landscape of different media in Russia is wide and diverse. The country has almost 37 thousand media outlets, including over 22 thousand newspapers and 12 thousand magazines. In audiovisual media, there are over three thousand television channels and two thousand radio channels registered. The Mass Media Act, passed in December 1991, regulates their activities.

Russia has very wide range of newspapers, over 400 daily, for every field. Most readers prefer weekly publications.

Television is, for most Russians, the main source of news. Judging by opinion polls, some 82 per cent of the Russian public see television as the principal information source, and prefer it to the press. Radio comes next with 24 per cent.

Most important nation-wide radio stations:

ITAR-TASS and RIA Novosti, the two national news agencies, are followed by private agencies Interfax and RBC.

The Russian Information Agency "Novosti" (former APN) has 50 offices in foreign states, seventeen in the CIS countries and receives information from correspondents and stringers from about 40 cities in Russia.

Internet is developing fast in Russia, and leading news portals and blogs compete with offline media. 6,5 % of all websites in the world belong to RuNet. Russian social network VK is among the most popular in the world with over 140 mln users. In November 2011, according to UK company ComScore, Russia became the European country with most internet users (52.486 mln), overtaking Germany, France and UK. President and leading politicians maintain personal websites and blogs.
