30.12.2016 - New Year greetings to foreign heads of state and government

Vladimir Putin sent Christmas and New Year greetings to heads of state and government and heads of international organisations. In his congratulatory messages addressed to the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Elizabeth II and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Theresa May, the President of Russia confirmed the conviction that the positive development of bilateral relations and partner collaboration in dealing with pressing international issues meets the interests of the peoples of Russia and the UK.

30.12.2016 - Statement by the President of Russia

We regard the recent unfriendly steps taken by the outgoing US administration as provocative and aimed at further weakening the Russia-US relationship. This runs contrary to the fundamental interests of both the Russian and American people. Considering the global security responsibilities of Russia and the United States, this is also damaging to international relations as a whole. As it proceeds from international practice, Russia has reasons to respond in kind. Although we have the right to retaliate, we will not resort to irresponsible ‘kitchen’ diplomacy but will plan our further steps to restore Russian-US relations based on the policies of the Trump Administration.

Do you think Trump changed his rhetoric after the election? Have you started preparations for his meeting with Vladimir Putin? Is it possible that Trump will visit Moscow and when? Sergey Lavrov: As President Vladimir Putin emphasised more than once, we are ready to work with the future US President and his team in order to overcome the crisis that developed in bilateral relations through no fault of ours. Naturally, we welcomed Trump’s intention to build normal cooperation with Russia, which he declared during his election campaign. During their telephone conversation on November 14, both leaders underscored the need to improve Russian-US ties, which are in very bad shape.

Question: Is the liberation of Aleppo the biggest step towards a settlement and the turning point in the fight against terrorism in Syria? Will Russia support Damascus in its efforts to liberate the rest of Syria from terrorists? Sergey Lavrov: The liberation of Aleppo is certainly a major step in the liberation of Syria from terrorists. It is important not just from the military but also from the political viewpoint, because Aleppo, apart from being a large city, is considered the economic capital of Syria.

26.12.2016 - Foreign Ministry statement on the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2334 regarding Palestinian-Israeli settlement

On 23 December the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2334 (2016) on the Situation in the Middle East, which highlights the problem of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territory. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 14-0, with the United States abstaining. This is the first time in the past eight years that the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on this issue. The Russian Federation voted for it because the resolution is based on tested formulas reflecting the general view of the international community, which have been reaffirmed many times, on the illegality of Israeli settlement plans in the Palestinian territory.
