Ushakov Medal presented to the Arctic Convoys Veterans

On 25-27 November Attaché of the Embassy Vadim Retyunskiy presented the Ushakov medals to the Arctic Convoys veterans Mr Evans James DAVIS, Mr Luther Howell THOMAS, Mr John STAPLES, Mr Arthur Vernon AVERY, Mr Evan Oswald EVANS and Mr Robert Lloyd OWEN, who were awarded this military honour by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation for their personal courage and bravery displayed in WWII.

"Battalion" film premiered in London

On 28 November the film Battalion, produced by Igor Ugolnikov, was shown at the London office of Russian cultural centre Rossotrudnichestvo. The film tells the tragic story of the First Battalion of Death, a women-only Russian combat unit of WW1, created by the Russian Provisional Government in spring 1917 to bolster the fighting spirit of its war-weary and demoralized troops. Battalion received a number of international film awards.

Slavianski Bazaar in Leeds

On 26 November an international cultural event `Slavianski Bazaar`took place. The event was arranged by the Baltic Slavic community `Baltica`and has already become a traditional annual festival of Russian and other East European communities of Leeds.

Ambassador Yakovenko meets Westminster-Russia Forum

On 23 November, Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko met in Rossotrudnichesto with the representatives of the Westminster-Russia Forum, a British voluntary group promoting a greater cultural, commercial and political understanding between the United Kingdom and the Russian Federation.

Demonstration near the Russian Embassy in London

On 23 November a demonstration in support of the Russia’s policy in Syria took place near the Russian Embassy in London. Among the slogans were “The terrorists in Syria are on the retreat because of combined Russian and Syrian military campaigns”, “The Russian and Syrian governments are fighting groups in Syria who wish to harm British citizens” and “The Russian military fights for UK security in Syria”. Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko went to meet the participants and thanked them for their support.

Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh visited South Ayrshire

On 11 November 2016 Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Andrey Pritsepov made a working visit to South Ayrshire to meet with local authorities and participate in the ceremony of awarding of young Russians – winners of the contest dedicated to Robert Burns.

Students of Russian school "Znaniye" presented exams certificates at the Russian Embassy

On 14 November the Embassy hosted the presentation of Russian language exams certificates to the students of the educational centre Znaniye (Knowledge). In 2016, a total of 19 Znaniye students passed GCSE exams, 25 took AS exams and 23 took A2 exams. The results of their A-levels tests have helped them to enroll in Britain's best universities.

Remembrance Day at Soviet War Memorial

Today we remember those who fought and died in two world wars for their country. We say “Lest we forget!”. What does it mean today, 100 years after WWI was unleashed? In the first place it means drawing lessons from history in order not to repeat it.
