Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov holds consultations in Israel

On 13-14 February 2012, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov hosted consultations between the heads of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation and the National Security Council of Israel on a number of international problems on the UN agenda.

The sides reiterated mutual commitment of Russia and Israel to the purpose of raising efficiency of the UN as a main international mechanism of collective response to various international challenges of the present. Gennady Gatilov supported the attitude of his Israeli interlocutors towards more active work on the UN platform.

The sides unanimously backed up the need for the UN reform process to be continued in the interests of stepping up the operative anti-crisis potential of the Organization. It was also emphasized that the decisions on the UN reform must go through an intergovernmental coordination mechanism, take into consideration approaches of all the member states and be adopted on the grounds of a most wide accord.

In the context of the UN Security Council’s work, the meeting addressed matters of the Middle Eastern settlement, the situation in Syria and around the Iranian nuclear program, as well as regional issues through the perspective of deep transformational processes in the Middle East. The Russian side highlighted that crisis situations cannot be settled by anything but political and diplomatic methods.

The Russian side also accentuated that the Arab-Israeli conflict, the settlement of which is crucial for achieving a comprehensive and stable peace in the Middle East, must not be sidelined in the wake of political changes in the Arab world.
