On Russian food assistance to Djibouti

The official food handover ceremony was held on 4 September 2012 in Djibouti.
Russian Federation provided food aid to the government of Djibouti, through the appropriate earmarked contribution in the amount of one million U.S. dollars to the UN World Food Programme fund.

Djibouti received 840 metric tons of food to cover two-month needs of 23 thousand people, it is about 20% of the citizens of Djibouti affected by the strongest in the last 60 years drought in the Horn of Africa.

Since the start of the humanitarian crisis in the subregion in 2011 the total Russian assistance in Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya exceeded 11.5 million U.S. dollars.

Russia intends to continue actively participating in the coordinated international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the countries in need in Africa.

On 19 July, the Russian Ambassador, Alexander Yakovenko, met the Political Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir Simon Gass, on the latter’s initiative. They focused on the situation in Ukraine, including in the light of the crash of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. The Ambassador expressed his condolences in the context of the death of British nationals in the crash.
