Ambassador Yakovenko’s remarks at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial (London, 9 May 2016)

Lord Mayor!
Your Excellencies!
Dear Veterans!
Ladies and gentlemen, friends!
Every May on this day we pay tribute to our war dead, to all those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against fascism.
This year marks 75 years since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. The Soviet Union’s entry into WWII brought hope that the Nazi war machine would be ultimately defeated. That was the first reaction of Sir Winston Churchill to the news of Nazi Germany’s attach against the USSR. The Victory came at an impossibly high cost. It look time to defeat the evil unleashed at the centre of Europe.
The battlefields of the Second World War represent a roll-call etched into our collective memory. The battles of Brest and Kursk, Sevastopol and Stalingrad. Decades later, the very names evoke pain.
Today we honour and remember the worthy deeds of our fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, all members of the Soviet and British armed forces who fought in one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. We mourn the youth cut down in their prime as they fought in the unimaginable conditions.
The lessons of history shall not be forgotten. As a one of our poets put it, “our dead will never let us down”. Neither should we.
That is why we work for peace to help people realize their aspirations for development and human rights. As never before, we know that no conflict has a military solution. Unless it is of the existential nature, like the one at that time. In our time it is the fight against the so called “Islamic State” and other terrorists and their poisonous ideology. No doubt these modern-day barbarians will not succeed either.
Today we feel ever greater respect and admiration for our veterans, including the British Arctic Convoy veteran, who fought selflessly with amazing courage.
I congratulate the veterans. Thank you for what you have done for all of us, for Europe and the world.
Long live the Victory Day!

Mr Chairperson-in-Office, Mr Secretary General, Ladies and Gentlemen, First of all, allow me to thank Slovakia’s Chairmanship for its hospitality. Here in Bratislava, where Western and Eastern Europe meet, we are reminded that the purpose of our organisation is to facilitate the emergence of shared security through cooperation, as well as the removal of dividing lines and the growth of mutual trust. The goal adopted at the 2010 Astana summit of building a community of equal, comprehensive and indivisible security should remain our utmost priority. Today, CSTO foreign ministers adopted a statement to this effect, reaffirming their commitment to this objective.

Q: How would you comment on the statement made by the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Nicholas Carter that the UK is in a state of cyber war with Russia? Has London raised this matter with Moscow? Has the British side provided any evidence? A.: This is not the first statement of this sort made by the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff, General Carter, and it certainly needs to be considered in the context of the large-scale anti-Russian propaganda campaign launched by the British government.

01.11.2019 - Permanent Representative of Russia to the OSCE Alexander Lukashevich’s interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, October 29, 2019

Question: Mr Lukashevich, I would like to start with a difficult question. The people seldom understand the role and importance of such institutions as the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). They believe that it is all talk and little action, apart from that of the adoption of resolutions. This is partly true. Are there too many international organisations that are hardly having any influence on realities? And it also costs a fortune to maintain them.
