PRESS RELEASES AND NEWS

16.03.2017

To participants and guests of the “Valentina Tereshkova: the First woman in space” exhibition (15 March 2017)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am glad to welcome you at the opening of the exhibition dedicated to Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova.
The name of Valentina Tereshkova, legendary “Chaika”, is known worldwide. She was the first woman to scale the heights of outer space. And the only one to have piloted a spaceship on her own. Her flight was one of the brightest and most significant events of the 20th century.
To the present day, the aspiration to learn the Universe has united scientists and engineers from many countries. Russia has been and is among the leaders of this movement. We strongly believe that cooperation in the exploration of outer space must serve the progress of entire humanity and develop only for peaceful purposes.
Astronauts say that if people were to see our planet from the space orbit, they would never want to harm it. What is more, they would try to make this world a kinder and better place. This very much applies to Valentina Tereshkova. She has always done and continues to do a lot for the development of international cultural and scientific ties.
I am sure that the visitors of this unique exhibition, held as part of the programme of the Russia-UK Year of Science and Education, will learn more about the history and the present day of the Russian space programme. And, of course, they will have the unforgettable experience of meeting Valentina Tereshkova.
I wish you a great evening and all the best.

D.Medevedev
Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation

20.09.2017 - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with TASS and The Associated Press, New York, September 20, 2017

Question (in English): After your meeting with Secretary Tillerson, how would you evaluate the relationship with the United States? And has Russia given up on hopes of a significant improvement under the Trump administration? Sergey Lavrov (in English): The relations are at a very difficult and a very low point, which is the legacy of the Obama administration. We certainly noted what President Trump was saying when he was running for president about the relations with Russia and what he continues to say. Basically, that he wants to have good relations with Russia, understanding that this would be in the American interests and the interests of solving quite a number of important and most acute world problems. And what I feel talking to Rex Tillerson is that this is the position of the administration. They are not happy with the current state of relations, and we are not happy at all. And I believe that the understanding is that we have to accept the reality which was created, as I said, by the spiral of unfriendly steps started by the Obama administration, but this reality is with us. And being responsible people, I believe the Russian Government and the US administration should exercise this responsibility in addressing the bilateral links as well as international issues. We are not yet at a point where this would become a sustained trend but understanding of the need to move in this direction is present, in my opinion.
