Comment on incident with British fans in Kazan

Q: Can you comment on the incident with the British fans, who were found in possession of flares?
A: According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan, a group of British nationals, who arrived in the Russian city of Kazan for 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup game between Chile and Germany teams, were found in possession of 61 flares. It is well known that possession of such pyrotechnic devices for use in sports venues is prohibited.
As the British nationals, who initially claimed to be members of an English media company, explained, these devices were meant to be used for filming a video on potential security loopholes in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Russia.
Based on this, it is bewildering that British nationals, who are believed to have entered Russia with Fan IDs, could be involved in planned provocations with the use of those devices, which would menace safety of spectators at the stadium in Kazan during a major international sports event.

18.01.2018 - Comment by the Information and Press Department on the Vancouver meeting on North Korea

The results of the Vancouver meeting on the DPRK held on January 16, which are included in the statement of its co-chairs - the United States and Canada - reinforced our doubts about the usefulness of this event. We were perplexed to see Russia and China mentioned in the document, especially given the fact that the foreign ministers of the two countries were not invited to the meeting that was supposed to focus on the Korean issue. We were particularly impressed by a passage on the importance and special responsibility of Russia and China in finding long-term solutions to Korean Peninsula issues. I would like to note that our countries have been offering such a solution and urging others to join it for a year now.

Mr Minister, friends, I am happy to welcome you to the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation. We met several times last year and this was important considering the high level of communication between the presidents of Russia and Iran. We were happy to welcome President of Iran Hassan Rouhani when he arrived on an official visit to Moscow last March. Later, Mr Rouhani met with President of Russia Vladimir Putin in Tehran and in Sochi. Our foreign ministries, security councils and other ministries maintain close cooperation. A regular meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation is being prepared. We suggested holding it at the beginning of this year.
