Embassy Press Officer’s reply to a media question concerning the investigation of the death of Nikolay Glushkov

Q.: 12 October marks seven months since the death of Nikolay Glushkov. Does the Embassy have any new information on this case?

A.: Unfortunately, once again we have to state that the British side continues to evade any sort of cooperation with Russia with regard to the investigation of the death of former Deputy Director General of “Aeroflot” Mr Glushkov that occurred on British soil on 12 March.

The British authorities continue to ignore numerous Russian requests, including the official request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation for legal assistance in the criminal case opened in Russia into the Nikolay Glushkov’s death. There are no answers to the Embassy’s proposals to arrange a meeting or consultations between the Investigative Committee, Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation experts and the Metropolitan Police representatives.

The Embassy was recommended to seek information from the police, only to be later directed back to the FCO. Our attempts to clarify where we should address correspondence on this case have failed. This amounts to a disregard by the British side of their obligations under the 1959 European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters and the respective Consular Conventions.

As before, the Embassy still gets highly limited information on the Nikolay Glushkov’s death investigation, and even that comes not from the British authorities, but from open sources, including media publications. But that is a big question whether media leaks are reliable. Such British authorities’ approach, which manifests itself in other cases as well, causes concern and attests to the policy of Conservative government to obfuscate the situation around the investigations of Russian nationals’ deaths on British soil.

We are watching with interest how the US is crossing a landmark line in foreign policy by launching sanctions, which Russia has long become accustomed to, against their own allies. 01.12.2019 - Embassy Press Officer’s answer to media question on Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab’s article in the Sunday Telegraph

Question: How would you comment on today's article by Dominic Raab entitled “We couldn’t confront Putin if Corbyn were PM”? Answer: In the heat of the election campaign we wouldn’t want to comment on ideas of what would happen if a certain politician came to lead the government. We would just like to mention that this is another example of short-term exploitation of the fictional “Russian threat”. We realise that this is done in the run-up to the elections as well as the NATO summit in London. Yet such publications are not helpful for Russian-British relations as a whole.
