Embassy's comment regarding the trip of the British journalist Janice Turner to Moscow

On February 14 the piece “Moscow is a shiny city that has lost its soul” by Janice Turner was published in “The Times” and met an unexpectedly live response of the Russian public. Remarkably, according to the information available to the Russian MFA, the above-mentioned British citizen visited Russia with a single-entry tourist visa, which does not give the right to work, and tourism was declared as the purpose of the trip. Ms. Turner also failed to obtain a proper accreditation, which is the legal basis for professional activity of a foreign journalist working in Russia, which means she had no right to work as a correspondent during her stay.

A number of questions arise: If Ms. Turner was in Moscow as a tourist, why did the newspaper publish her material as a piece by its columnist? If she visited Moscow on an editorial assignment, why not request a proper journalist visa? Does this mean “The Times” encourages its journalists to violate Russian laws?

It is regrettable that the arrogance and ignorance of some journalists also apply to visa regulations. Especially considering the actions of the UK media regulator Ofcom, who, reacting to the appeals of "outraged citizens", regularly issues warnings to the Russian media.

The Russian MFA has requested “The Times” to clarify the situation.

We are watching with interest how the US is crossing a landmark line in foreign policy by launching sanctions, which Russia has long become accustomed to, against their own allies. 01.12.2019 - Embassy Press Officer’s answer to media question on Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab’s article in the Sunday Telegraph

Question: How would you comment on today's article by Dominic Raab entitled “We couldn’t confront Putin if Corbyn were PM”? Answer: In the heat of the election campaign we wouldn’t want to comment on ideas of what would happen if a certain politician came to lead the government. We would just like to mention that this is another example of short-term exploitation of the fictional “Russian threat”. We realise that this is done in the run-up to the elections as well as the NATO summit in London. Yet such publications are not helpful for Russian-British relations as a whole.
