Embassy press officer replies to a media question over the letter by the son of Dawn Sturgess

Question: How would you comment on the letter by Ewan Hope, son of the late Dawn Sturgess, to President Putin, appearing in today’s Sunday Mirror?

Answer: First of all, we feel deep sympathy towards Mr Hope. Just like him, we would like to see his mother’s death to be fully investigated. A year has now passed since the Salisbury incident, but everyone is still invited to take the official British version for granted. Instead of supporting it with evidence, the authorities prefer to feed the public with multiple leaks, while refusing to confirm or deny them. Now it turns out that even the closest relatives of those affected are kept in the dark over what actually happened, and they have to seek truth in Russia.

As for the Russian side, immediately after the incident, as early as 9 March 2018, we expressed our readiness to take part in the investigation. We offered the UK to join efforts of the investigating teams, and later sent an official request for legal assistance. All these proposals have been rejected.

As recently as 26 February, UK Ambassador in Russia, Laurie Bristow, again made it clear that Britain is not interested in cooperating with Russia. It looks like London prefers fueling anti-Russian hysteria to establishing the real picture of what happened and make it public.

We intend to provide Ewan Hope with the report, “Salisbury: unanswered questions”, that the Embassy has prepared one year after the incident. The report contains a comprehensive account of information available to Russia. We are also prepared to meet with Mr Hope and to reply to all questions that he may have regarding the official Russian position.

We are watching with interest how the US is crossing a landmark line in foreign policy by launching sanctions, which Russia has long become accustomed to, against their own allies. 01.12.2019 - Embassy Press Officer’s answer to media question on Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab’s article in the Sunday Telegraph

Question: How would you comment on today's article by Dominic Raab entitled “We couldn’t confront Putin if Corbyn were PM”? Answer: In the heat of the election campaign we wouldn’t want to comment on ideas of what would happen if a certain politician came to lead the government. We would just like to mention that this is another example of short-term exploitation of the fictional “Russian threat”. We realise that this is done in the run-up to the elections as well as the NATO summit in London. Yet such publications are not helpful for Russian-British relations as a whole.
