Embassy Press Officer’s reply to a question on Russia’s ongoing operation in Idlib

Q: How will you comment on the publication by the Times arguing that Moscow “has rejected calls by President Trump to stop bombing of the Syrian rebel enclave of Idlib”?

A: We regard the publication as another attempt to mislead the readers about Russia’s true intentions in Syria. Our country remains fully committed to agreements on stabilization in Idlib, and to the Turkish-Russian memorandum dated 17 September, 2018. Let me remind you that the memorandum reiterates strong commitment to eradicate terrorists from the Syrian soil. Guided by these principles and in response to aggressive actions by terrorist groups in Idlib, Russia is providing necessary support to the Syrian governmental in order to clean up this area from the armed elements recognised by the international community, including the UK, as terrorist organisations.

It is worth mentioning that in November 2018 militants from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) controlled about 60 percent of the Idlib de-escalation zone, whereas currently they are controlling 99 percent of it. Only in the past two months, Russia has registered 398 ceasefire violations on their part. Over this period, shelling by the terrorists killed 76 and wounded 194 Syrian military officers. And the toll of casualties is still growing. HTS militants are terrorising the local population, militarizing civil infrastructure, and using civilians as a “human shield”. These abuses must be stopped as must be the attempts by some Western leaders to present terrorists as “opposition fighters” or even as “innocent civilians”.

At the same time, we do share concerns over the humanitarian situation in Syria and are making our contribution to reconstruction of the country. Since July, Russia has helped Syrians to restore 856 educational and 168 medical facilities, repair five bridges and over 1000 km of roads, build 968 km of transmission lines, launch 143 water facilities, 196 bakeries, 645 power stations, 14305 industrial facilities. We believe that the international community should join our efforts in resolving the existing humanitarian problems by putting aside politicized and biased approaches to this pressing issue. The Syrians deserve a better future.

16.05.2020 - Ambassador Andrei Kelin's letter to Financial Times

Dear Editor, I feel compelled to express disagreement with the Financial Times coverage of Russia’s efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Judging by your reports, Russia’s response has been to manipulate with figures at home and to spread disinformation abroad, with the government acting inefficiently and doctors having inadequate protection. This distorted picture requires a refutation. Even by most pessimistic accounts, Russia’s performance in terms of healthcare system capacity and death rate is among the best of all major countries.

Sir, Roger Boyes is wondering why Russian industrialists (he calls them ‘oligarchs’) are helping to fight Covid-19. Are they suddenly ‘embracing philanthropy’, or ‘cleaning up their nasty image’, or else seeking to impose a ‘new compact’ on the ‘floundering’ government?
