Embassy press officer’s reply to a media question concerning reports in the British media about recent arrests of illegal rallies participants by Russian police in Moscow

Question: How would you comment on the publications in the British media about the excessive use of force by the Russian police during the rallies in Moscow held on August 3, 2019?

Answer: We have seen taken note of recent reports in the British media condemning the actions of the Russian police during the rallies in the Moscow city center in support of unregistered candidates to the Moscow Duma elections. First of all we would like to note that the numerous illegal protests which  took place on August 3 in Moscow had nothing to do with democracy or freedom of expression. It becomes clear that the goals of protesters were anything but ensuring their voters rights. Many of the protesters do not even have an idea who the so-called opposition candidates actually were. It also looks absurd that people not living in Moscow are fighting for the political rights of Muscovites. Furthermore the persons wanted in connection with the extremism propaganda as well as 150 young people who had long been evading military service were found among the participants of the illegal rallies. It also proven that foreign citizens participated in the Saturday rallies, for provocation purposes only.

In this context, we would like to emphasize that despite widely-spread propaganda used in social media only 1,500 people took part in dubious political actions. The fact that over 90,000 Muscovites preferred to attend the music fest in the Moscow Central Park of Culture that day testifies beyond any doubt that illegal protest movement lacks any support among those living in Moscow.

Once again, we must to note that articles devoted to the detention of illegally protesting citizens in the UK media are biased and lacking objectivity. Active participation of the British media representatives in rallies, as well as their clear violation of the principles of impartiality in covering this topic, makes us think about their involvement and immediate interest in influencing the internal political situation in our country.

We would like to remind that organizers of mass riots in the UK can be sentenced to 10 years in prison. The British police also have the right to independently take measures, including the use of physical force and special equipment in case of unauthorized or prohibited public events that impede traffic or pedestrians.

Detention of about 500 participants of the peaceful environmental protest "Extinction Rebellion" held in April 2019 is a good example of such actions of the British police.

Question: Mr Vershinin, following the UN General Assembly session, it was stated that, in the wake of the visa scandal, several UN General Assembly committees could be transferred from New York to another country. Do you think it is possible? Sergey Vershinin: I think this is feasible, but the decision should be taken by the General Assembly. This is not the first time the United States has violated its obligations under the UN Charter and the agreement on the location of the organisation’s central bodies in the United States. As you may be aware, this is not just a question of this year or today. We have been raising this issue for many years, specifically, since 2004, in the special UN Committee on Relations with the Host Country, because there were similar incidents then, too.

26.09.2019 - Embassy Press Officer comments on new data regarding the Salisbury investigation

On 25 September, the Metropolitan Police published new data on blood tests taken in March 2018 from individuals that might have been affected by a nerve agent in Salisbury. The samples did not reveal any traces of exposure. Leaving aside the question of why the tests have been carried out only now, let us point out that the absence of traces of “Novichok” does not help to support the official British version of the incident. But there is another aspect to the news.

22.09.2019 - Embassy Press Officer replies to a media question regarding Charlie Rowley’s intention to sue the Russian Government

Question: How would you comment on the plans by Charlie Rowley, a victim of the Amesbury poisonings, to initiate judicial proceedings against the Russian authorities? Answer: As far as we understand, these plans are at a very preliminary stage. A lawsuit specifically against the Russian Government is but one of the options considered by Mr Rowley’s lawyers. For our part, we fully share Charlie’s desire to establish truth regarding his poisoning that also resulted in the death of his partner Dawn Sturgess. Mr Rowley is seeking clarity over the “unanswered questions”, which is, incidentally or not, the title of the Embassy’s own report with questions to the British authorities.
