07.05.2020 - PHOTO: On paying tribute to Soviet soldiers of World War II

In total there are 18 Soviet military graves across the UK. Throughout April and beginning of May Ambassador Andrei Kelin and Embassy staff have paid tribute and laid flowers to the graves of Soviet soldiers of World War II, buried at cemeteries in Aldershot, Chester, Liverpool, Shaftesbury and Tidworth. Part of the memorial work will also be covered by our compatriots living in the UK. It is important to preserve the memory of these heroes who fought for our freedom and died while defending the Motherland.


07.05.2020 - Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Dominic Raab

On May 6, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Dominic Raab at the latter's initiative. The two officials exchanged greetings in connection with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the victory in WWII. They noted the contribution of the members of the anti-Hitler coalition in the fight against Nazism, and emphasised the importance of using the alliance's experience in mobilising the international community's efforts to counteract today's global challenges. Particular attention was paid to discussing the efforts being taken to tackle the spread of the novel coronavirus infection and to overcome its effects.

Mr Torkunov, MGIMO University is rapidly making the switch to new technologies in the face of the real restrictions the coronavirus has placed on in-person interactions. I was told that you had managed to organise the switch very quickly without somehow losing the materials you have to impart, in addition to the knowledge. I am confident that MGIMO University will do a good job of holding its exam period, the defence of graduation theses and the state final certification. I hope that you will find a creative way to enroll new students. I don’t know how the campaign will be organised, but please ask if we can do anything to help you. We will try to be useful.


25.04.2020 - Joint statement by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of the United States of America Donald Trump commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe

April 25, 2020, marks the 75th Anniversary of the historic meeting between Soviet and American soldiers, who shook hands on the damaged bridge over the Elbe River. This event heralded the decisive defeat of the Nazi regime. The meeting on the Elbe represented a culmination of tremendous efforts by the many countries and peoples that joined forces under the framework of the United Nations Declaration of 1942. This common struggle required enormous sacrifice by millions of soldiers, sailors, and citizens in multiple theaters of war.

On 22 April 2020 Ambassador Andrei Kelin and his spouse, as well as the Embassy Defence and Military Attaché Colonel Mikhail Ivanov, paid tribute and laid flowers to the graves of to Soviet soldiers of World War II, buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery. The ceremony is part of a series of commemorative events dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Victory in World War II.
