13.03.2017 - Briefing by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Moscow, March 10, 2017

This would have been possible if the global media – the global information corporations that call the information tune around the world – were objective. But expecting objectivity from them is absolutely unrealistic in principle. You see what is going on in the United States. The media have turned from a mechanical instrument of political struggle into an active participant of the information war. These are two different things. The information such as you mentioned is unlikely to be used for an objective analysis of the situation. We have pointed to a very dangerous trend: the public is losing trust in the global media at a time when there are objective data that need to be carefully analysed. Unfortunately, these data are often hushed up and disregarded, while fake news about hackers and their influence on elections and internal political processes are published on front pages.

10.03.2017 - Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Department Director Mikhail Ulyanov’s answer to a media question following Russia’s use of veto power on a UN Security Council resolution on Syria

Question: There has been a series of publications in the Western media criticising Russia over its recent veto on the UN Security Council’s resolution on Syria. Could you comment on this? Mikhail Ulyanov: It’s just another attempt to shift the blame to someone else. In fact, the whole idea of a UN Security Council vote was openly provocative. Suffice it to say that the draft resolution introducing sanctions against a number of Syrian individuals and legal entities was prepared in early December, but its Western co-authors refrained from putting it to a vote. They did so only in late February, that is, when talks on a peaceful settlement in Syria resumed in Geneva. We drew our Western colleagues’ attention to the fact that this step could have an extremely negative impact on the search for political solutions. They completely ignored our concerns. In other words, it was a deliberate step, the political implications of which did not worry the sponsors of the resolution in any way.
