27.07.2017 - Russian State Duma urges the European Parliaments to condemn destruction of WW2 memorials

The Embassy has forwarded to the British Parliament a message of the Russian State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation whereby it urges the European parliaments and parliamentary institutions to condemn the recent incidents of destruction and desecration of monuments and memorials in honour of soldiers of the Anti-Hitler Coalition in some Eastern European countries.

26.07.2017 - Khan Sheikhoun: we must establish the truth (by Ambassador Yakovenko for RT)

The question of what really happened in Khan Shaykhun on April 4 still remains unanswered. Russia’s critical attitude to the methods of work and to the conclusions of the report of the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) in Syria on this matter is well known. For three months of work, the FFM could only prove the use of sarin, thus confirming the findings of the Syrians themselves, who managed to obtain samples onsite. We believe there are fundamental flaws in the work of the Mission, including the following: the inquiry was conducted remotely, without visiting the scene of the incident; the CWC’s basic chain-of-custody principle hasn’t been honoured; in fact, the main question remained unanswered – under what circumstances and how exactly the chemical agent was deployed.

26.07.2017 - Comment by the Information and Press Department on CNN videos about alleged Russian weapons deliveries to the Taliban

We have taken note of the CNN videos about alleged Russian weapons deliveries to the Taliban. It is impossible to take videos that show obsolete weapons of unidentifiable origin seriously. The weapons in question have no brand stamps or numbers. These are standard weapons that could be made anywhere. Everyone knows that these weapons were produced not only in Russia but also in other countries, including in Eastern Europe, from which the Americans transported large batches of these weapons to Afghanistan in the early 2000s.

Between July 18 and 24, Russian humanitarian aid was delivered to the civilian population of Sana and Aden, respectively, in the Republic of Yemen. Aircraft belonging to the Emergency Ministry delivered over 40 tonnes of cargo, including large capacity tents plus food products. On July 19, 62 citizens of Russia and several other countries were brought back to Moscow by a return flight from the Yemeni capital.

25.07.2017 - Embassy comments on The Sunday Telegraph Christopher Booker’s piece on Dunkirk

It is preposterous to say that Russia would rather forget Dunkirk. We had a similar tragedy in the summer of 1941, and had no other option but keep on fighting. Russia was the means of last resort in dealing with that existential threat to European civilization.

24.07.2017 - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at a meeting with Vice President of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki, Moscow, July 24, 2017

It is a pleasure to see you again. We value greatly our relations with you. Iraq is one of our most important partners. We support the Iraqi government’s efforts to normalise the situation in the country, and above all, to eradicate the terrorist threat. The Iraqi armed forces and security forces are making a concrete contribution to these efforts, of course, as is the four-party information centre opened last year in Baghdad by Russia, Iraq, Syria and Iran.

19.07.2017 - Embassy Press Officer on Lord Ahmad’s comments regarding the judicial ban of Jehova’s Witnesses in Russia

On 20 April, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation satisfied a legal claim of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation by enforcing a ban against Jehova’s Witnesses and its subsidiaries in Russia on the grounds of extremist activities under Federal Law “On Counteraction of Extremist Activity” 114-FZ of 25th July 2002. On 17 July 2017, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal against the decision lodged by the Administrative Centre of the Russian branch of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
