Russian Minister of Education and Science meets UK Minister for Education

The Russian Minister of Education and Science, Dmitry Livanov met with UK Minister for Education the Rt Hon Nikky Morgan to discuss the preparations to 2016 Russia-UK cross-year of language and literature, and possibilities of signing of joint agreement of recognition of education certificates in future and a number of bilateral issues and the area of education and science. The Russian side urged the British government to explore the possibilities of raising the prestige of the Russian language within the English secondary education.

A delegation from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science takes part in the Education World Forum

A delegation of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science headed by Minister Dmitry Livanov took part in the Education World Forum at London’s ExCeL. The EWF addresses a wide range of educational policy issues and challenges faced by academic and scientific society in the 21st century. During they stay in London the Russian delegation visited the “Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age” exhibition at the Science Museum featuring important Russian objects of the space era. Minister Livanov met the Directior of the Science Museum Mr Ian Blatchford and thanked him for the museums contribution to cultural exchange of the two countries.

Ushakov Medal presented to the Arctic Convoys Veterans

On 14 January Attaché of the Embassy Oleg Shor presented the Ushakov medals to the Arctic Convoys veterans Mr Reginald Claude Charles PEGRAM, Mr Jack MILLARD and Mr Donald Roy HUNTINGFORD, who were awarded this military honour by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation for their personal courage and bravery displayed in WWII.

Ambassador Yakovenko visits Gift of Life charity gala

On 13 January Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the UK Dr. Alexander Yakovenko visited Old Russian New Year’s Eve 5th annual Gala in the aid of the Gift of Life charitable foundation. The Gift of Life Foundation was registered in the UK in 2011. Its main objective is to raise funds in Britain and other European countries to fund the medical treatment of children, who are beneficiaries of the Russia’s “Podari Zhizn” (Give Life) Foundation. Both Foundations help and support thousands of children with cancer (about 4,500 children a year). Since 2011 the Foundation has raised over £2mln for Russian children.

On 22 December the diplomats of the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in London met with representatives of Russian community associations of Britain and answered their questions on consular matters (passports, citizenship, legal aid, consular registration etc.).

British Arctic Convoys veterans from York and Newcasle upon Tynes receive Ushakov medals

On 19-20 December British veterans from York and Newcasle upon Tynes were presented the Ushakov medals for their personal courage and bravery displayed during their service in the Arctic Convoys in WWII by Attaché of the Russian Embassy Mr Vadim Retyunskiy: Mr Robert Sunderland (the medal was presented to his daughter), Mr Raymond Braithwaite, Mr Ronald Syson, Mr Harry Watson (the medal was presented to his daughter), Mr Lucas Hodgson, Mr Henry Thomas (the medal was presented to his son), Mr Henry Thirlaway, Mr William Hedgecock, Mr Robert McFerlene and Mr William Roberts.

Digital barbecue at the Russian Embassy

On 10 December 2015 the Embassy hosted its fifth "Digital barbecue" - an event for top British bloggers, social media experts, Diplomatic Club members, diplomats and journalists. Moderated by Jimmy Leach, the panelists Michael Binyon, Afshin Rattansi, Jon Laurence and Mark Flanagan discussed the topics "Mainstream media vs Alternative world views" and "From Fleet Street to Tweet Street. Has news gone social?".
