Visit to Warrington

On 10 June at a solemn ceremony in Warrington representatives of the Russian Embassy presented Ushakov Medals to British veterans who were awarded these honours for their personal courage and bravery displayed during their service in the Arctic Convoys in WWII.

Participants of the ceremony were welcomed by Warrington Borough Council and Warrington Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid, and Mayor of Halton. Multiple guests, including veterans’ families, representatives of the local authorities, press and Russian community attended the event.

Following the awards ceremony, renowned Russian sculptor Leonty Usov donated a wooden bust of Mikhail Sholokhov, the Russian Nobel prize laureate in literature, to Warrington Town Hall. While Sholokhov is famous for his epic novels set in the Cossack lands, Warrington has a road named Cossack Ave. The sculpture compliments the Town Hall arts collection, its installation being an event of the Russia-UK Year of Language and Literature 2016.
