Russian Ambassador Andrei Kelin’s welcoming words to the guests at the opening of the “Stalingrad in British History” exhibition at the St Albans Museum and Gallery, February 28, 2020

Dear Mayor, Distinguished guests, Dear friends,

Russia and Great Britain were key allies in World War II. And Britain was the only country to have launched a mass fund-raising movement to support the city of Stalingrad which suffered heavy damage from Nazi bombings. People from over 300 towns and cities across the UK have participated in this campaign, including St Albans.

The exhibition “Stalingrad in British History” is dedicated not so much to the history of the battle itself, as to this precise partnership and solidarity among the peoples of our two nations.

The exposition consists of rare materials from Russian and British archives, never published before. Moreover, this display continues a series of commemorative events that took place in 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of sister cities’ ties between Volgograd (the current name of Soviet Stalingrad) and Coventry.

The friendly relations that have established between the cities of our two countries clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of public diplomacy. They form
a solid base for building up Russia-UK cultural and humanitarian ties, and continue to be an important bridge in developing friendly relations between the people of Russia and Great Britain.

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of our common Victory over fascism, and the “Stalingrad in British History” exhibition is an excellent opportunity to pay our respects to those who fought and who gave their lives for this victory and our freedom. Today this is especially important among numerous attempts to falsify history.

As long as we remember our history, the horrors of war and its consequences, there is still hope that we can avoid such tragedies in the future.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy the exhibition.

Thank you and have a pleasant evening.
