Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko met with MPs to discuss Ukraine

On 21 July, in the run-up to Prime Minister David Cameron’s discussing the situation in Ukraine in Parliament Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko met with a number of MPs to explain the Russian approaches to the situation in that country.
During the meeting the Ambassador stressed that everything possible must be done to ensure that international experts can work in safety at the crash site. All those who are responsible for the situation in the region must take greater responsibility before their own peoples and before the peoples of the countries whose citizens became victims of this disaster. It shouldn’t be used for selfish political ends.
Alexander Yakovenko assured that Russia would do everything within its power to move the conflict in eastern Ukraine from the military phase we see today to a negotiating phase, with the parties using peaceful and diplomatic means alone.
Parliamentarians’ attention was drawn to the fact that the tragedy of the Malaysian airplane was a direct consequence of the civil war in Eastern Ukraine. As the Russian Ambassador stressed, had the military operations not resumed in Eastern Ukraine on June 28, this tragedy could not have occurred.
It was noted that Russia had serious questions regarding actions of the Ukrainian authorities (deployment of air defense weapons in the conflict zone; presence of Ukrainian fighter jets in civilian air space; inexplicable actions of Ukrainian air controllers etc.). Alexander Yakovenko emphasized the unacceptability of solving the Ukrainian conflict with armed methods (especially when the authorities in Kiev apply those against their own people) as well as encouraging the Ukrainian leaders from outside to further violence.
