Ambassador of Russia meets Acting Permanent Under Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK

On 15 August, the Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko was summoned to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for a meeting with the Acting Permanent Under Secretary Matthew Rycroft.
The focus was on issues related to the situation in Ukraine. The British side, on the basis of publications in the British media, expressed concern and asked for clarification with regard to the alleged crossing of the Ukrainian border by a column of Russian armored vehicles.
On his part, Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko noted that these publications, as well as much of what has been written recently in the British media on the situation in Ukraine, are not true. There are statements to that effect by competent Russian authorities.
Alexander Yakovenko drew the attention of his interlocutor to the fact that such reports are thrown in by the media ahead of major political events in the European Union, at which Ukraine is discussed.
The Ambassador asked Mr Rycroft to share the UK assessments of the investigation of the Malaysian airliner MH-17 crash, as well as the position of London in respect of Russian correspondent A.Stenin, detained by Ukrainian security services. The British side was urged to use its influence on Kiev to have A.Stenin set free.
Within the context of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine Alexander Yakovenko expressed regret over Western countries’ silence in the face of the large-scale military operation by Kiev in Eastern Ukraine, which results in civilian deaths. The Ambassador drew attention to the Russian humanitarian mission and reiterated the need for an early settlement in Ukraine.
