Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko’s remarks at the reception dedicated to Defender of Motherland Day (24 February 2015)

I’m delighted to welcome you all at the Russian Embassy for the celebration of the Defender of Motherland Day. This is the Russian Armed Forces Day, which have a glorious history. In 2015 we remember the victory over Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe, including taking by storm of Budapest, Vienna and Berlin. Last month the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz was marked as the Holocaust Memorial Day. On 9 May we will be marking the 70th anniversary of the victory in Europe in WWII. Our common history of the war-time alliance served a crucial impetus for the creation of the United Nations and a new post-war global security architecture which secured peace in Europe for decades and made sure that the scourge of Nazism does not reappear.
These days the world is undergoing a major transition. And all the signs are there to prove that this is not just another historical swing, but a change of an era. We see a global rebalancing and the emergence of a new polycentric world order. Naturally, the international situation is marked by growing turbulence and unpredictability and tougher global competition. Particularly, the conflict in Ukraine is a serious challenge to the world security. Our hope is that the recent agreements achieved in Minsk will help achieve a lasting political solution in that country. On 17 February the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing these agreements. We count on this resolution to be duly implemented by all the parties concerned. All the more so that there already is ample proof that this crisis doesn’t have a military solution.
In these turbulent times, it is normal for any country to make sure its armed forces are able to guarantee its security. This is obviously true for Russia, whose armed forces are successfully fulfilling its tasks as set out by the political leadership of the country. International contacts of our military are intense and diverse. Besides bilateral military cooperation, the Russian Armed Forces forces participate in UN peacekeeping operations and other peacekeeping missions all over the world.
It has to be noted that one of the challenges to Russia is the continued existence of the Cold War military alliance in the Euro-Atlantic with the combined defence budgets that are 17 times bigger than ours. Its borders have been constantly shifting toward our borders. Unfortunately, it demonstrates that things material tend to acquire a life of their own mistrust. Now in view of the Ukrainian crisis, we see that this problem cannot be wished away and has got to be addressed to fulfill the promise of a Europe whole and free, which is incompatible with different levels of security in our continent. Security system has got to be truly inclusive and collective. I hope the Ukrainian crisis will help get message address to all European capitals.
Thank you once again for joining us and congratulations!
