Update on the progress of the Ushakov medal campaign (as of 10th August 2015)
Dear Veterans and Families,
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in London currently continues to present the Ushakov Medals to British veterans of the Arctic Convoys.
The Russian Embassy accepted applications for this medal in the period from 16 June till 31 October 2013. All applications were processed and a list of over 3,300 veterans was sent to Moscow. A Presidential Decree awarding these veterans was signed on 10 March 2014. Awards have been issued only for those veterans, who provided their correct personal information and proved their eligibility for this military award.
An electronic copy of the relevant Presidential Decree (in Russian) can be found in the PDF file here .
If you believe that you or your relative are on the list, please call us at 0207 229 36 28 to check.
In the period from July 2014 to August 2015 the Russian Embassy held a series of awarding ceremonies in London, as well as numerous presentations in various parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland and Wales, and presented about 2000 Ushakov Medals. At the same time, medals to veterans living in Scotland have been presented through our Consulate General in Edinburgh.
While the Embassy makes everything in its power to expedite the process, it takes time and effort to reach out to each and every Arctic Convoys veteran.
If you have been awarded the Ushakov medal and would like to receive it as early as possible, you may ask your family member, friend or any other authorised representative to collect this award on your behalf at the Russian Embassy in London, 6/7 Kensington Palace Gardens W8 4QP. Recipients are kindly asked to make an appointment in advance at tel. 0207 229 36 28 or email: ushakov@rusemb.org.uk, so that we can prepare your medal and its paperwork.
Please be aware that this state award cannot be mailed and is only presented personally against signed acknowledgment.

25.09.2015The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society held an Evening of History & Memories with British Arctic Convoy Veterans at the historic Churchill College in Cambridge, on Thursday, 24th September.
The event was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War – the biggest and most devastating war in human history; to our shared history and memories of wartime, which are kept by our families and friends and passed through generations, to common values of friendship, understanding & peace between people and nations; and in memory of all those who lost their lives due to war.
Nine British veterans who took part in the Russian Arctic Convoy mission during the Second World War arrived from different parts of England to Cambridge. For some of the veterans (in their 90s) this was their first visit to Cambridge and to Churchill College. Upon their arrival, whilst having refreshments, they were met by representatives of the local press and TV and then given a tour of the Churchill Archives by Mr Allen Packwood, where they saw artefacts and documents from their historic early days.
The meeting was held at Jock Colville Hall at Churchill College. It was opened by Prof David Reynolds from University of Cambridge, who provided a general historical and diplomatic context for the convoys during the war. After that the veterans shared their personal memories of wartime and their visits to Russia, showed photographs and answered questions from the audience.
There were around hundred people who came to the evening. Some travelled from Sussex, Kent and further parts of East Anglia for this event. The atmosphere was very informal, and inspired open participation. There were interesting personal stories about wartime experiences, shared by the veterans and guests, reading of poetry, singing of wartime songs and a commemoration ritual. The veterans appreciated the warm welcome and vivid interest from the local public spanning different backgrounds and age groups, including academics, students and children.
During the drinks reception many guests expressed thanks and made positive comments about the evening, highlighting its heart-warming atmosphere, insightful discussions and the feeling of unity and understanding that it embodied.

12.06.2015On 12 June 2015 a reception on the occasion of the National Day of Russia was hosted by the Consulate General of Russia in Edinburgh. The event was attended by the representatives of the Scottish Parliament and Government, local authorities, business, academia and Russian community, as well as the Veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the Arctic Convoys.

The event featured Russian XIX and XX centuries songs performed by Glasgow-based ‘Russkaya Capella’ choir.
Address of the Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Andrey Pritsepov
at the Reception on the Occasion of the National Day of Russia,
Edinburgh, 12 June 2015
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Дорогие друзья,
Dear Friends
We have a very special occasion to celebrate today. It is the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of Russia’s Sovereignty.
A year ago at my first National Day Reception I promised to travel a lot to get to know as much Scotland as possible. I kept my word by traveling intensively while accomplishing the best assignment in my entire career, namely presenting highly esteemed Russian Military Awards to the Veterans of the Arctic Convoys residing in Scotland.
You all know that despite young age our country has a long history. Long enough for the archeologists to argue which city was the first Russian capital and for the Scottish soldiers to join Russian army as early as in the XVI century.
Our history was not an easy one. But we are proud of it due to a great record of explorations, discoveries and creativity.
Let us list just a few inventions important for all of us. At the very same time as Scotsman John Logie Baird worked on developing the concept of the television, Russian Vladimir Zvorykin did invent a well known to all of us analog TV. Alexander Popov demonstrated his radio device before Guglielmo Marconi.
Great chemist Dmitry Mendeleev is known as the father of the Periodical Table. And he was working on it here, at Edinburgh University.
There is one page of the history that I could not fail to mention. We celebrate this year one more anniversary - the 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the World War II. Some very special bonds emerged during that time. The Arctic Convoys sailed to the Soviet Union from Scapa Flow, Loch Ewe, Greenock. Soviet sailors and pilots were stationed in Scotland. A very touching episode was the exchange of the war time albums. Glasgow sent one to the people of besieged Leningrad to demonstrate their support and received the matching reply – a proof that the city will neither surrender nor abandon its traditions of creativity.
These pages of history must be remembered, but most of all people who brought us Victory must be honoured. I am delighted that we are joined today by Mrs Natasha Ivanova-Black, the Russian veteran, and by the British veterans of the Arctic Convoys. Please, give them warm welcome.
It is very important that the Veterans join us today, because celebrating the end of the war is not enough. The very memories of those times should be preserved and safeguarded in order not to let this disaster happen again. It is even more vital because the war history is not cut in stone and cannot protect itself on its own, getting more vulnerable with time, while attempts to rewrite the history, to blacken the white and whiten the black, are conducted more frequently.
Our sacrifices will not let us ever forget that war. They keep us cherish and value peace and stability. It is of paramount importance for me to say that today on Russia’s National Day our thoughts are with our neighbours in Ukraine, with the people with whom we lived together for centuries and shared all our hardships and triumphs, celebrated same achievements and bemoaned same losses. One can hardly find a Russian who has no Ukrainian roots. From the bottom of our hearts we wish Ukraine peace and prosperity.
And last, but not least, I would like to address my compatriots who live in Scotland.
Дорогие соотечественники! С Праздником вас, друзья, с Днем России! Знайте, что мы все вас любим и гордимся вами!
04.06.2015 On 4 June 2015 Consul General Andrey Pritsepov welcomed at the Consulate General of Russia in Edinburgh two Veterans of the Arctic Convoys who travelled from Scotland to Russia earlier this year to take part at the Victory Day Parade on 9 May 2015. At the meeting, Mr David Craig from Kilmarnock and Mr Geoffrey Shelton from Glasgow shared their impressions of the trip and the celebrations as well as their war-time memories and demonstrated unfailing sense of humour that helped them to get over the war hardships.

20.08.2014A veteran of the Arctic convoys that took arms and munitions to the north of Russia during the Second World War has received an Ushakov medal to honour his service.

Raymond Banger picking up his medal: Submitted

Raymond Banger as an 18-year-old
Royal Navy veteran Raymond Banger, from Bramerton, near Norwich, was one of 38 surviving naval personnel who received their medals at a ceremony at the Russian Embassy in Kensington Gardens in London last month.
The medal recognises the efforts made by the British to deliver goods to Soviet forces, defying German submarines.
Until last year, Foreign and Commonwealth Office rules stated that British veterans could not receive a foreign medal if the act they honoured happened more than five years ago.
Last year, however, the British government gave Arctic Star medals to convoy veterans, before a decision was made to allow veterans to receive the Ushakov medal 70 years on.
Mr Banger joined the Royal Navy at the end of 1942, aged just 17, and after training as a wireless officer was drafted to HMS Conn, a frigate and leader of the 21st Escort Group.
The Conn’s duties were convoy protection and its journeys twice ended near Murmansk, northern Russia.
A convoy was usually collected from Iceland or joined up with at sea.
The Conn operated from Belfast and Mr Banger has fond memories of the Northern Irish city where they were warmly welcomed.
During the last two years of the war the Conn sank two U-boats and helped in the destruction of three others.
Mr Banger, 88, who lives with his wife Joan, who is a sculptress and the authoress of “Norwich at War”, said: “It was a proud moment receiving the medal from the Russian ambassador. The medal had originally been refused by our government.
“I had a letter from the Russian Embassy telling me that Vladimir Putin’s visit to David Cameron had persuaded the PM’s mind.
“And the medals were presented in such a special way; they could not have done anything more for us – we were treated like royalty.”
Born-and-bred in Norwich, Mr Banger’s father was a cartoonist for the Pink ‘Un.
After returning from the war, he became a woodworker and a sales rep. He has one son and two grandsons.
The journey to the northern ports of Russia was once described by Winston Churchill as “the most dangerous journey in the world”.
Between August 1941 and May 1945, 78 convoys risked attacks from Nazi U-boats and aircrafts as they travelled dangerously close to occupied Norway and German air, submarine and ground forces.
There was also a likelihood of severe weather conditions, fog and strong currents. About 1,400 merchant ships delivered supplies to the Soviet Union, and they were escorted by ships of the Royal Canadian and US navies.

22.07.2014The Ushakov medal awarding at the Russian Embassy
On 22 July Ambassador of Russia to UK Alexander Yakovenko on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin solemnly presented Ushakov medals to veterans of the Arctic convoys at the Russian Embassy (prize list attached). The ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of those killed in the crash of Malaysian Airliner. In response, the vice chairman of the Club of the British Arctic convoy Stanley Ballard on behalf of all participants thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin, who highly evaluated heroic deeds of British sailors during the Second World War. More than 100 guests including relatives of veterans took part in the ceremony. During the event official photo of Russian Ambassador with veterans was made (published on the website of the Embassy).
