Ambassador Andrei Kelin's interview to Cathy Newman on Channel 4 News, 8 December, 2021

Key points:

Russia does not have a slightest intension to attack Ukraine.

Russia is moving its troops: a) on its own territory; b) due to seeing clear and immediate threat from NATO build-up more and more close to the Russian border.

Situation in Ukraine is getting more explosive. By feeling NATO support, nationalistic powers there are more tempted to solve the internal crisis by force.

The people of Crimea voted at a referendum for the reunification of the peninsula as part of Russia. Everything was done in accordance with international law.

Russia sees NATO’s expansion to the east as a clear and immediate threat to its security. We need serious guarantees that the alliance has no plans of striking Russian territory.

Russia would like to see Western capitals, including London, drive Ukraine towards implementing Minsk Agreements, rather than send military support to UA and therefore push Kiev towards thwarting them in favour of using force.

Russia stands for peaceful and friendly development of world order, yet we need to take precautions to ensure our security.

Russia has proposed numerous offers to US and NATO on ways to decrease tensions. Not hearing back from the West raises our concerns.

If UK has serious concerns on “cybersecurity threat from Russia”, it knows all the channels through which to discuss them – just like we have a dialogue with US. Regrettably, London prefers to raise them through the media.

It would be beneficial for the UK to restore normal relations with Russia.

Unlike fake news that “Russia interested in sowing chaos in Europe etc”, we are genuinely interested in stability in the world, just as in having normal relations with all countries, including UK.
